The Situation

Viddyoze is an online platform designed to democratize video production, offering users the ability to craft professional-quality videos and animations with ease. Launched in 2015 by founders Jamie Garside, David Chamberlain, and Joey Xoto, Viddyoze provides a rich library of pre-designed templates that cater to a wide array of video content needs, enabling both novices and experts to bring their visions to life effortlessly.

David and the Viddyoze team had recognized that although their codebase was the cornerstone of a significantly profitable product, it was constrained by the technology that was available when it was developed. Consequently, this limitation had a cascading effect, making enhancements challenging, and as developers gravitated towards more current technologies, the pool of potential hires began to shrink.

They had begun work migrating to a Lottie based solution but had found that the development team were not progressing as swiftly as the initial projectiosn. They were looking to replicate existing functionality as well as build off some fresh designs, making use of Remotion, so that they could gauge whether a shift in tech stack would help the business to hit its goals

Solution + results

Building off a library of existing components, the full functionality was replicated within a couple of weeks. The Figma designs were well-thought out and Tailwind made it quick to replicate. Documenting the architecture as a final step allowed the developers to look through the code and understand how it was working, making a fair compare and contrast between Remotion and Lottie.

While they ultimately stayed the course with Lottie for their primary offering, they used their Remotion learnings to build another tool, Beatwave, which assists as a marketing funnel and raises brand awareness for Viddyoze.
